Photography as a hobby

Camera clubs,

photographic society

Photography is an almost unique hobby, not only can it be practised by any age group and at any age, with the many and varied types of equipment it also adapts to what time, money and resources you have available to devote to it.  It can be practised alongside any other hobby and thereby used as a method of visually recording any subject you point it at!

It doesn't matter if the camera you use is throwaway camera, point and shoot, vintage large format camera, mobile phones or a digital camera the price of a new luxury car!

As with most things, a little knowledge about how to use your camera can make a huge difference to the outcome of pressing the shutter.  A Camera Club, or photographic society is one of the best places to quickly improve the quality of your images with both practical help readily available and assignments to go out and try, whatever your level of expertise.  You can of course stay at home and get better pictures by reading magazine articles and books about how to do it or you can get out there and take pictures.

Whatever your level of expertise there WILL be as many who can help you as there are that you can help!

There are many camera clubs available in the three counties area of Beds, Bucks and Herts and of course across the country and the world.  They are all different and some are run better than others and some are friendlier than others!  Some of them are expanding and many are contracting in membership!  There are still too many that do not yet have an internet web site and some that do the reality bears little or no resemblance to the club itself!

With the emergence in the last ten years of digital cameras, the clubs that would have closed down because of a failure to attract new members have been given a new lease of life.   Some still sneer at this new fangled digital stuff and others embrace it completely!  It's a confusing choice.

Whatever the club, whatever your aspirations, it should be FUN!  Which club is going to be the best club for you will depend on several factors:

What level you are currently at,

Hobby photographer, semi pro or full time professional?  (Yes even full time professionals join camera clubs!)

Have you just bought your first digital camera, or do you have more cameras than lenses? :-)

Do you use film, slides, digital or all of them?

What you want to achieve;

    Take better pictures?

    Enter competitions?

Learn about something specific? Wildlife, portraits, landscapes, hi-speed photography

    Learn about computer enhanced photography?

There will be an interactive database available soon, but if you can't wait until then click here to email me... be sure to enter your location, aspirations and level of experience! I'll try and suggest a club near you that might be a good place to start.

But above all else, get out there and take more pictures, have fun and ENJOY it!
