We first heard of Arfur before we saw her.  We heard a story about a young unbroken mare that wouldn't box and was being whipped into the box whenever the owners wanted to take her to a show.  When they arrived at the show, she was too terrified to come out so they would tie a lead rein to a Landrover and drag her out!

We made some enquiries and at that time couldn't afford the asking price but with another lady who had also heard the story we bought "Twinkle" as she was known then, between us.  So we owned "Arfur" horse... :-)  Some time later we bought out the other half share but by then the name had stuck and still remains, Arfur!

She has been with us for three years now and is a boisterous, happy young lady, full of life and utterly fearless.  Deciding on her own to walk in through the back door into a shady kitchen from bright sunlight bears testament to that.  It's taken a lot of work to get her to this point from being totally unaproachable and having her kick out or bite anything human and being frankly very dangerous, but the work of Monty Roberts and Kelly Marks has been invaluable to this horse mumbler and photographer in saving the life of this wonderful creature and getting her to the point of being ridden.  Had we not met, I'm certain it was only a matter of time before she killed somone or been destroyed.

Although she was shown in hand and did well, I'm not a big fan of showing in hand, so the search continues for something for her to do.  At the moment she's learning voice commands and has a vocabulary of about 20 words.  "Give me back the TV remote control" is not any of them!

If you are having problems with a horse, perhaps not as strange as this story, do let me know as I can put you in touch with someone in your local area who can help!

The difference they can make is amazing!

Kitchen? that's the latest in luxury stables! :-) Arfur had been enjoying a daily training session based on the works of  a certain Mr Monty Roberts with the objective of getting her into my photographic studio to take some images against a studio backdrop and with the benefit of the large studio flash lights.  Not an environment that a horse normally associates with the term comfortable!   On the specific day that the picture was taken, I was stuck on the phone and late getting the training started... So, Arfur decided to come and find me and tell me that she was ready for her close up.  I should perhaps have added that Arfur somehow disarmed the electric fence, opened the gate and got out of her paddock, found a bus stop, caught three buses and got into a lift to GET to my back door!  She prefers the lift as she hates using the stairs.

(Ok, I made up the bit about the buses and getting in the lift,

but I exaggerate only for the purposes of clarity!)

Sadly she is now banned from the house after hiding the remote control  for the TV when she saw who won "Only fools on Horses"
